The last decade has seen a plethora of gourmet burger restaurants hit the high streets, and these days diners have their pick of deliciously juicy patties for low fast food prices.

But for burger fans with cash to blow and a taste for luxury, a Dutch chef has created the world's most expensive meaty sandwich that costs a whopping NZ$3124 (€2,000), the Daily Mail reports.

The burger - which is confirmed as the world's priciest by Guinness World Records - contains some of the most lavish ingredients you can buy, including lobster, caviar, foie gras, and truffle.

But its creator Diego Buik says that he's actually tasted a better burger that only costs £14 (NZ$25) from a UK restaurant chain.

The beef patty in the world's priciest burger is a blend containing the most expensive steak in the world - a Japanese dry-aged Wagyu, while the other is a luxurious Black Angus beef steak.

The lobster is infused with Hermit Dutch Coastal gin, while other prime toppings include artisan Remeker cheese, Japanese fruit tomatoes and pricey Iberian ham.

The burger sauce is made using lobster and a host of other top-quality ingredients that reads like a gourmand's dream shopping list: Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, Madagascan vanilla, saffron, and Japanese soy.

And to top it all off, the brioche burger bun (worth €120 (NZ$187 on its own) is covered in 24 karat gold leaf.

Self-confessed burger mega-fan Buik, chef at the South of Houston restaurant in The Hague, told Munchies Netherlands that he created the pricey sandwich to earn a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

He had already made and sold 100 different types of limited edition burgers to celebrate selling 15,000 burgers at his previous workplace in just six months.

But this time, he wanted to try something truly headline-grabbing to celebrate International Hamburger Day on May 28.

The total cost of ingredients for his pricey burger came to €1,000 before he had even started cooking with them, which would bring the price point up to €2,000.

But Buik, whose love of burgers stems from his time working for Soho House in London for two years, said his pricey burger - though delicious - is not the best he's ever eaten.

That crown goes to a humble burger he ate at a Byron restaurant in the UK which cost him just £14.

Despite creating the world's most expensive burger, Buik told Munchies that he would never spend that kind of money on a burger himself.

Revealing what his burger tasted like, he said: "The meat was next level, and for 645 euros (Rp 9.6 million) per kilogram, it better be. As soon as I swallowed the last bite, I wished I'd chewed more slowly.

"It's insane to consider the amount of money you can eat in only 10 minutes. When I think about it like that, I'd rather have those 1,124 McDonald's hamburgers. They'd last me a lot longer."

His gold-leaf-topped burger doesn't feature on his restaurant's menu, but he said he would be willing to make it for someone if they asked for it.

Just make sure you give him plenty of notice, as it requires "a lot of prep time".
