Caitlyn Cannon, an 18-year-old from Oak Hills, California, wanted to leave her mark in her school’s yearbook. She wanted to make a statement.

The senior, who proudly describes herself as a “really gay” feminist, captioned her yearbook photo with the following quote:

"I need feminism because I intend on marrying rich and I can’t do that if my wife and I are making 75 cents for every dollar a man makes."

There are so many things right about this — the pride, the advocacy for gay marriage and the demand for equality. Unsurprisingly, students took notice, and one tweeted out a photo of the empowering caption.

In just three days, it was favorited nearly 10,000 times and retweeted over 6,000 times.

Yesterday, Cannon talked to Cosmopolitan about her unexpectedly viral quote and the support it garnered.

She explained:

"While it would have been fun to submit something funny or silly, I think it was more rewarding to submit the truth and call some attention to it. Scrolling through the replies, I’ve seen a mixture of agreements and disagreements, although for the most part it was people saying ‘Yes!’ and getting excited about it, which was rad.

No matter how much [opposers] complain and try to belittle it, feminism will always exist, as long as women do not have the same opportunities and privileges that men have."

We love this, you go guuuuurl!
