After celebrating Christmas year after year since we were born, we can admit that we've gotten pretty used to doing everything the same year after year.

Wrapping presents, cooking the Christmas feast and decorating the tree are all tasks we love to get amongst every year and will admit we're pretty damn good at.

And that's why it came as such a huge surprise when we found out that this whole time we've been doing it all wrong!

If you're like us, you'll wrap your lights just like the tinsel, wrapping the lights around the tree in a circular motion.

But according to the designer Francesco Bilotto, the correct way to do it is to drape the lights vertically (up and down) the tree, to prevent the lights falling too far into the middle of the tree and becoming hidden.

Explaining his design choice to HouseBeautiful.com, Francesco said, "This way every tip of your tree, from branch to branch, will twinkle with delight.

"Another added bonus is when you dismantle your tree and take off the lights, it'll be easier and less messy to remove strands from the exterior of the tree - rather than fighting a stubborn almost dried branch."

While we're thinking about vertically balancing the lights on the tree may be a bit of a mission, Francesco explains that it's actually really simple! All you need to do is start from the top of the tree with the end that doesn't have a plug and then let the lights hang down to the bottom of the tree.

You then move the lights a few inches to the right and drape the lights back up to the top of the tree and just repeat the process until the whole tree lights up brightly.

He also had a pretty helpful tip of how to make the lights shine even brighter by hanging the most reflective and shiniest ornaments further into the middle of the tree so that the light shines off them.

So if you're a bit late in decorating your Christmas tree, give it a go and see if your tree does shine brighter! Just a hint- you miiiight need a ladder for this one.
