Being gay can be especially tough in some conservative cultures.

For Jennifer, and her partner of 11 years, Sam, not only will Taiwan not acknowledge the pair’s wedding as bride and bride, but neither will Jennifer’s parents.

So when her parents refused to walk her down the aisle and attend the ceremony, her boss took his efforts to support an employee to the next level.

CEO of HSBC bank, John Li, offered to escort Jennifer down the aisle.

"My parents are strongly against it," says Jennifer. "Whenever my father sees Sam, he will push her out and tell her to get lost."

"Before we came out we were always afraid...I worried most about work," she said. "I was concerned that it would stop clients banking with HSBC. So I considered it very carefully and realised that some clients were very supportive."

The wedding party was especially moved by Li's willingness to play such an important role in the wedding.

"CEO John was willing to walk me down the aisle, [he even] told us not to be nervous and to walk slowly," she says.

Most of all, Jennifer hopes that her wedding will serve as an example of acceptance of LGBTQ people.

"This wedding is really for the LGBTQ community," says Jennifer. "We hope our actions will encourage people and create respect among different communities."
