Whether she's liked it or not (usually not), Millie Elder-Holmes has been in the public eye much of her life.

As the daughter of late broadcaster Sir Paul Holmes, she's endured some of life's toughest battles whilst in the spotlight, including a meth addiction, the death of her beloved dad and the murder of her long-time partner, Connor Morris.

Not long after losing two of the most important men in her life, Elder-Holmes moved to her birth father's homeland of Greece, and began using her social media accounts to chart her journey back to wellness once more.

And in between healthy recipes and photos of quaint village streets on that burgeoning social media platform are some of Elder-Holmes' most bluntly honest observations.

Here are five of the best pieces of advice she's doled out recently.

"Everybody is beautiful"

Just this past weekend, Elder-Holmes did what many women would never be brave enough to do – post her bikini photos online.

In sharing the photos, the blogger said she felt inspired to post about body image and the importance of self-acceptance.

She talked about the time she weighed in at 89kg, "fresh off methamphetamine and clueless about food and exercise", and when she was at her leanest, during training for a celebrity boxing bout.

"In both situations, I was at opposite ends of the spectrum; one eating everything and anything and not working out at all, and the other working out two times a day and watching my food. Neither I could maintain," she wrote.

"Self-acceptance needs to be shown more in mainstream media, and I feel that for bloggers especially we have a unique opportunity as real people to show ourselves unfiltered, raw and real, not photoshopped, smoothed, and edited."

Dealing with the haters

Coping with negative comments is something Elder-Holmes is all too familiar with and it was something she mused about while drinking a giant cup of tea on a trip to India earlier in the year.

After telling her Instagram followers to cut toxic people out of their lives, she said: "We also have to understand that negative people also are just hurting or in a lot of pain and sometimes the best thing you can do is give those people space.

"Remember you are not for everyone, you're not meant to be understood by everyone or even anyone and that's ok, as long as you are ok with you, then you’re on the right path."

Remembering it's all about the little things

Elder-Holmes turned 29 last month and while she says she doesn't celebrate birthdays anymore, she likes to count her blessings each year.

Posing on Instagram with a bright bunch of flowers delivered to her work on her birthday, she said she initially thought they had come from a friend in Greece.

"But they were from Connor's family. This was the most amazing gift I could've gotten today.

"It made me realise it really is about the people and the small thoughtful things that really make me treasure life."

Life, as they say, goes on

When Elder-Holmes realised it had been a whole year since she moved to Greece, she told her social media followers what she had learned about life after losing a significant other.

"I had to find myself again and try to figure out who I was without that person anymore and this past year I've done that," she said in September last year.

"This last 12 months showed me that life will always go on, and it's for you to decide what you make of it. It's taught me how to accept myself, that I deserve to be happy and that getting some distance from your situation for anyone, regardless of something bad happening to you or not, will open your eyes and give you perspective in some way or another and I highly encourage that."

And you know the one about stopping and smelling the roses?

She highly recommends that one, too.
