Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has been slammed after he appealed for stand-up desks to be in every school to stop child obesity.

He also wants to see children encouraged to squat rather than sit.

This comes after research revealed that using a standing desk for three hours a day, five days a week, can burn an extra 30,000 calories a year – which is equivalent to running 10 marathons.

Oliver announced that he is in talks with UK government health bosses to tackle the “war on obesity”.

And was “gobsmacked” by the response to his push for tougher measures.

The father-of-five said: “I have been amazed by how positive the reactions from the public have been.”

However, the 42-year-old’s crusade has left many angry.

One fan commented: "I will start listening to Jamie Oliver when he donates the profits from all the high calorie deserts he sells in his restaurants back into schools!"

Another added: "Jamie Oliver would be speaking with my solicitor standing up and hunching over desk causes back problems and a child at 6 or 7 having to deal with chronic pain all their life due to his lack of knowledge he would certainly be liable in my books."

"I call him the "fun vacuum". He's had his childhood and now he's a grown up seems hell bent on ruining childhoods for the kids now. He needs to keep his bloody nose out," a third wrote.
