Following confusion over Tom's condition, after LAPD initially confirmed he'd passed away but then apologised and retracted their comments, he was said to still be "clinging to life" in the hours after being rushed to the hospital.

However, his agent Tony Dimitriades later revealed he had died when his family agreed to switch off his life support after learning he had no brain activity.

The longtime manager of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, confirmed the musician had passed away in a statement:

"On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends."

According to TMZ, Petty was surrounded by his friends, family and his bandmates at UCLA hospital in Santa Monica, California, when he sadly slipped away.
