Thousands evacuated after underground fire in central London

A large part of central London was closed and thousands evacuated after an underground fire broke out.

The alarm was raised when smoke was seen rising from an intersection. A few hours later flames started to emerge from the ground. The fire is believed to have started among electrical cables.

More than 2,000 were evacuated with cordons being set up to control the blaze.

A spokesman for LFB said: ‘We are still waiting for the utility companies and a steer on what we can do. The fire continues to still burn. There are a lot of electrical cables down there.

‘But we cannot tackle it effectively until the power situation has been resolved.’

He added that the fire is not connected to the London Underground but that Holborn Tube station has been closed for the purposes of traffic management.
