Marriage proposals and romance go hand-in-hand – but that can mean a lot of things for different people.

For one Kiwi man, it meant conducting what is now being called "the most elaborate marriage proposals New Zealand has ever seen."

Fitness star Josef Rakich got down on one knee to ask partner Marya Mattii the big question in the middle of Auckland’s Eden Park stadium - but not before surprising her with a helicopter ride, a pink Range Rover and fireworks.

But is that everyone's dream proposal?

According to a survey conducted by hitched.co.uk some of the most popular ways to pop the question included doing it while away on holiday, on a special day like a birthday, anniversary or Valentine’s Day, or during a romantic meal.

In a private location like at home, or a secluded beach were also winners for a lot of couples. While for others public locations such as at the top of an iconic building, or with friends and family watching nearby made the day special.

It goes to show that a simplistic thoughtful proposal can be just as phenomenal as an extravagant, over the top gesture. In fact, some may prefer it.
