Kids can be cruel ... but there's something that can be done about it.

Bullying is a serious problem in New Zealand schools, but often the effects of bullying can still be felt years on.

This morning Sarah revealed her own personal experience with being bullied during one of the hardest times in her life - after her mother died.

Sarah's emotional story is an example of why there needs to be a change in schools so that this same kind of hurt doesn't happen to the younger generation.

Now a new anti-bullying scheme called the "Kiva programme" is being adopted by some schools around the country. The programme - which originated in Brazil - encourages bystanders to step in when they see bullying happen rather just turn a blind eye and do nothing.

The idea is that kids will support those being bullied and not let all the responsibility fall on the victim to try deal with their tormentor alone.

Listen to Sarah's heartbreaking story above.
