Ed Sheeran breaks down in tears performing new song about his daughter

Ed Sheeran broke down in tears as he performed a new song about his daughter.

The 30-year-old pop star and his wife Cherry welcomed their daughter Lyra into the world in August, and Ed was visibly overcome with emotion as he performed at the memorial of Michael Gudinksi, a music executive, in Australia.

Ed - who penned the track amid the coronavirus lockdown - stopped midway through the new single and apologised to the crowd at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.

The chart-topping singer explained: "I never get this nervous, I’m really f****** nervous. So apologies if I mess up the lyrics or anything."

Ed revealed he'd written the track while in quarantine in Australia.

He also insisted he appreciated the opportunity to perform Down Under, having travelled to the country from his home in the UK.
Ed said: "I’m extremely, extremely grateful to be here.

"I know it’s a difficult thing to get into this country and I don’t take it for granted for all the hard work getting me here and I really, really just appreciated the opportunity to get here.

"In lockdown I was able to have a guitar for quarantine ... I always find the best way to process stuff is to write songs, be it good news, bad news and here’s a song I finished last week."

The lyrics of the track, which is called Visiting Hours, tell the story of Ed talking to his late granddad about the challenges of parenthood.

In particular, the emotional record sees the pop star asking his granddad for advice about raising his daughter.
He sings: "I wish that heaven had visiting hours.

"So I could just show and bring the news that she’s getting older.

"And I wish that you’d met her.

"I wish that you’d met her.

"The things that she’d learn from me I got them all from you."
