Errol Douglas MBE is a hair stylist to the stars with a client list that includes the likes of Charlize Theron, Erin O’Connor and Jourdan Dunn.

He knows better than anyone the mistakes people can make - and damage they could be doing damage without even realising it.

Here, the Knightsbridge-based stylist gives the Daily Mail his top tips on preventing breakage and getting the hair of your dreams.

The five mistakes to stop making immediately include brushing your hair when it's wet, washing your hair too often - and not taking in the right nutrients to keep your locks looking thick and glossy.

1. Overdoing it with heat

'It's unrealistic to never use heat on your hair during the cooler months, however managing how often you use these tools and the type of tool will make a huge difference to your hair health.

'Lowering the temperature on your styling tools and drying your hair with cool air are simple and effect ways to minimise damage to the hair follicles - as is investing in a heat protector spray.

'The heat of your shower takes its toll too. Water that is scolding hot or freezing cold will damage your hair so try to keep your shower at a moderate temperature.'

2. Washing it too often

'Bad habits are easy to create and hard to break, this applies to hair as well.

'If you're washing your hair every day, use dry shampoo to wean yourself off until you're down to twice a week.

'This will help to prevent dry scalps and to rebuild the natural oils which help your hair look silky and smooth.'

3. Not cutting it often enough

'Maintaining your hair length and your hair health can be a very difficult balancing act.

'More often than not my clients don't want to lose their hair length. 'Dusting' is a great hairdressing term for a cutting technique that is a very tiny trim.

'This keeps the hair healthy without losing any length and is especially important for those living in built-up areas - as factors such as smog and city air can zap moisture making hair dry, brittle and prone to getting split ends.'

4. Brushing wet hair

'One of the most forgotten steps in beauty routines, which take under five minutes, is brushing hair when it's dry and never leaving it til after your shower.

'When your hair is wet it's much more vulnerable to breakages, so - prior to showering - comb through your hair when it's dry.

'I recommend a wide tooth comb or Tangle Teezer, and to work your way through your hair from the ends up.'

5. Not eating right

'It's time to ditch processed foods and refined sugars if you're truly committed to achieving your dream, glossy hair.

'Eat more oats, spinach and healthy fats will make a huge difference to your locks - as silica, biotin and zinc are all vitamins contained in these foods which help to create thick, healthy hair.'
