The 89th edition of the Oscars will take place today.

Musical La La Land - which is about two performers struggling to make it in Los Angeles - has been nominated for 14 awards, including best picture.

New Zealand’s John Gilbert's nominated for best editor for his work on Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge.

The Kiwi says he's happy to have been nominated for an Oscar, however, is not looking forward to the idea of having to give an acceptance speech, telling Fairfax:

"It is nice to be nominated and to win would be a bit of a bonus, but to be honest, I'm not expecting it. There's a part of me that would breathe a huge sigh of relief if I didn't have to get up and speak."

Gilbert won a BAFTA earlier this month.

Based in Wellington - he's previously been nominated for an Oscar in 2002, for his work on The Fellowship of the Ring.
