A 5-year-old's night of feeding the homeless prompted the youngster to write to the Prime Minister to ask for extra housing.

Peyton Kauri's father, Kody Kauri, had taken his five children with him to Bruce Pulman Park in Papakura on Saturday night to feed the homeless.

On the car ride home, Peyton asked her dad why they were cooking such large amounts of food and giving it away.

"I explained to her that we were just trying to help people who were a bit down on their luck," said Kauri.

On Wednesday morning, Kauri found a letter next to the microwave penned by Peyton, addressed to John Key:

"My name is Peyton and I'm going to be the Prime Minister one day. But right now can you please make the people that have to live in a car have a house. Thanks."

Her father said: "I read it and I was pretty blown away, this was coming from a kid and you don't really expect them to react like that."

Kauri said it was a proud moment for him, and a reminder that children were always watching parents' behaviour.

"Even though they might not say it, they're always taking it in."

When Kauri asked Peyton when she wrote the letter, she responded casually that she'd written it "the other day".

The Herald approached the office of Prime Minister John Key for comment, who referred to Minister for Social Housing Paula Bennett.

She is to respond to Peyton's letter today.
