The race isn't the only thing that stops the punters at the Melbourne Cup carnival.

From florals to fascinators, the Cup is all about colour, character and couture.

Myer ambassador Jennifer Hawkins led the red trend in a pants suit by Australian designer Misha Collection, paired with a wide brimmed Melissa Jackson Millinery hat.

The pants suit/playsuit/jumpsuit (call it what you will) is a step away from more dresses and gowns, and thus would have ruffled some feathers in the traditional fashion world.

Some commentators also noted that there was 'too much' cleavage on display - despite this being a rather reserved example of a plunging neck line.

Fellow ambassador Rachael Finch, who is currently pregnant with her second child, said she loved Hawkins "sexy" look.

"I love the suit look. I think pants on a woman is incredibly sexy and it's modern and new aged," she told news.com.au.

"It's sexy, it's beautiful and it's comfortable as well."
