One person is in critical condition and another is in serious condition after the car they were in fell off a four-storey car park building in Auckland last night.

Police say a vehicle fell from a multi-storey car park in York St, Newmarket, about 8.40pm.

The falling vehicle landed on another vehicle, believed to be empty.

"There were two occupants in the fallen vehicle and it is believed no occupants in the parked vehicle," police said.

One of the patients was already in hospital and the other was on the way, a St John Ambulance spokeswoman said at the time.

The two people were initially trapped in the car, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.

A man who was eating at a nearby restaurant said he heard a "huge crash" and ran out to see what had happened.

He said the wreckage of a car was on the ground upside down.

It was "100 per cent totalled", he said.

The man, who did not want to be named, said the car had come off a Tournament carpark building.

Emergency services are still at the scene and the police serious crash unit will be investigating the cause of the incident.
