The All Blacks have had to dig deep to beat Argentina 26-16 in their Rugby World Cup opener at Wembley.

The defending world champions trailed 13-12 at half-time and had captain Richie McCaw and centre Conrad Smith sinbinned.

McCaw was yellow carded for tripping, and the Wembley crowd were outraged.

The Pumas extended their lead to 16-12 early in the second half before Aaron Smith scored the All Blacks first try in the 57th minute.

Sonny Bill Williams made a huge impact off the bench, running hard at the line and proving he has plenty to offer on attack.

Sam Cane crossed in the final quarter to secure the win.

First five Dan Carter kicked four penalties and two conversions while lock Guido Petti dotted for for the Pumas in the first half and Nicolas Sanchez kicking three penalties and a conversion.
