We didn’t really need an excuse to eat more cheese, but scientists have just given us a reason to feel better about doing it.

Instead of making us fatter, one small study appears to show that cheese could actually be preventing us from gaining weight.

The researchers wanted to find out why the French can eat all the cheese and still stay trim, they called it ‘the French paradox puzzle.’

To do this, they compared the diets of three groups: one high in milk, another high in cheese and the other on a controlled diet.

Analysing urine and feces samples (lovely), they found that the people eating a ton of cheese had a something different going on in their gut.

These guys had higher levels of the fatty acid butyrate, which has been seen in animal studies to prevent insulin resistance, speed up metabolism and help ward off obesity.

To wrap that all up, people eating cheese had higher levels of butyrate that can help prevent weight gain, aka the best news ever.

The study was pretty small with only 15 guys involved, but we’re willing to test out their theory.

All in the name of science of course.
