An 18-year-old woman has died after a crash in central Dunedin this morning.

Emergency services attended the incident at the intersection of Hope and Stafford Streets in Dunedin about 2.20am.

Police said a car on Hope St with six people inside failed to give way to a utility vehicle on Stafford St at the intersection.

The 18-year-old woman was initially trapped and reported as unconscious.

CPR was performed before St John arrived and rushed the critical woman to Dunedin Public Hospital but she died shortly after arrival.

The driver initially fled the scene but was found by police "a short distance away" and was now assisting with enquiries, police said.

Several people were injured in the crash and taken to hospital.

Dunedin police, public safety staff, a Serious Crash Investigator and a forensic photographer will be working on the scene and ongoing investigation.

The Hope and Stafford St intersection is currently closed and would be re-opened once the scene investigation has been completed.
