Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is warning the death toll will climb as the search for survivors continues

The shake was felt right across Italy and there have been around 150 aftershocks.

Many of the victims were in the towns of Accumoli and Amatrice, where the mayor says around three quarters of the town has been totally destroyed.

Mayor Segio Pirozzi told state broadcaster RAI “the aim is now to save as many lives as possible. There are voices under the rubble, we have to save the people there”.

Many young tourists were in Amatrice for the town festival being held over the weekend.
