The area surrounding the Sydney Opera House has come a 'ghost town' following a police operation.

Police confirmed an operation was under way at the Opera House and the Manly ferry terminal service had been suspended.

The area surrounding the venue has been cleared although a police spokesperson told Yahoo7 no evacuations had occurred, contrary to several media reports.

The operation began about an hour ago, but officials could not confirm any further details.

There are unconfirmed reports the operation could be the result of a hoax.
