A fire truck was driving past a downtown Auckland cafe this morning, when an explosion shattered the business' windows.

The crew immediately raced to the Fondue cafe, while a second truck was dispatched to the Hobson St address.

Station Officer Robert Appleton says incredibly, there were no injuries.

He says a chef was reportedly using a handheld butane torch which caught fire and exploded.

However, the exact cause is still being investigated.

The adjoining Auckland City Hotel was evacuated
