Roads leading to the eastern Coromandel Peninsula township of Whitianga have been closed due to flooding.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has closed State Highway 25 both to the north and south of Whitianga.

Waikato Civil Defence has just advised one of the routes out of Whitianga has reopened.

The township could be reach from the north using the previously flooded Simpsons Beach but the bridge to the south of Whitianga was still under water.

A severe rain watch has been issued for the Coromandel Peninsula.

Motorists are being advised to delay travel if possible or use the highway around the peninsula to reach the eastern side.
