A South Auckland school was put in lockdown this morning as police hunted for a man they believed to be armed and making threats against his family.

Police Northern Communications Shift Inspector Andy Brill said armed police were called to a Mangere address shortly before 9am.

They were looking for a man believed to be armed and making threats against his family.

"We had a fire arms incident where we were looking for a person in the South Auckland area."

The man was not located but is no longer believed to be armed.

Two firearms were recovered. His family is "safe and well".

St Mary Mackillop Catholic School on McNaughton Ave was put in lockdown as a precaution, said Mr Brill.

"We needed to check an address to make sure this guy wasn't there and it was near a school so we got them to stay inside while we did that."

Police were informed of the incident by a member of the public.
