A man has died and two others have multiple injuries after a head-on crash in Te Awamutu, leaving the road temporarily closed.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Paterangi Rd at about 4.30pm today where the man crossed the centre line while navigating a corner, Waikato Rescue Helicopter said.

The road is now likely to be closed until 8pm today, Waikato District Command Centre senior sergeant Juliet Burgess said.

The woman driver, in her 60s, in the other vehicle, was trapped in her car, delaying medical attention.

She and a six-year-old boy were flown to Waikato hospital with multiple injuries.

Another young boy with less serious injuries was transported to Waikato Hospital via a road ambulance, police said.

Diversions were in place and motorists were being advised to avoid the area if possible.

Police urge road users to take care and exercise extreme patience during the holiday period.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or drove through the crash scene immediately after the accident occurred are asked to contact Te Awamutu Police on 07 872 0100.
