Halberg Inclusion Training is making sport accessible for all

Fresh off taking part in the Halberg Games, Dame Sophie Pascoe admits she may have underestimated what it takes to get back into athletics.

“I decided to run a 200 metres,” she told Jono & Ben during a visit to a local primary school. “Guys, I’ve been retired for too long. I’m still sore.”

Even with the post-race aches, her passion for inclusion in sport is stronger than ever. It’s a big part of why she continues to back the Halberg Foundation.

“The Halberg Foundation is about getting young people with impairments into sport and using sport as a way to help them achieve their dreams,” she said. “Behind the Halberg Awards is a foundation supporting young children with impairments to get involved in sport.”

Pascoe discovered Para sport at just 10 years old, when options for kids with disabilities were limited. Swimming became the spark that eventually led her to the Paralympics.

Now she’s helping ignite that spark for others through Halberg Train on the CoachMate app, giving teachers, coaches and parents practical tools to create more inclusive sporting environments.

She says that sense of belonging at a young age can shape a lifetime.

“The people who made my life easier and made me feel included are the people I still remember today. Inclusion is hugely powerful.”

Pascoe also wants coaches and teachers to know that small adaptations can make a massive difference for kids who just want to get out there and play.

“Every young Kiwi deserves to play sport. Download CoachMate and access Halberg Inclusion Training modules to build inclusive sport environments, turning awareness into action, making sport better for everyone.”

Her 19 Paralympic medals might be tucked away at home now, but inspiring the next generation through initiatives like Halberg Train is just as meaningful to her as any podium moment.
