Jono Pryor was the official Town Crier for Auckland's City Rail Link opening ceremony

After weeks of campaigning, The Hits Breakfast host Jono Pryor helped mark one of Auckland’s biggest transport milestones in a very old-fashioned way.

There are few people who could turn a major infrastructure opening into a comedy storyline quite like Jono Pryor.

After months of jokingly campaigning for the role, The Hits Breakfast host officially stepped into the shoes of Auckland's Town Crier as crowds gathered for the opening of the City Rail Link today.

The running gag has been building for weeks on The Hits Breakfast. Back in July, Jono revealed he was pushing to become Auckland's official "Town Pryor", with Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown reportedly backing the idea ahead of the City Rail Link celebrations.

And today, that mission became reality.

Jono found himself hidden inside a train ahead of the opening ceremony as preparations got underway for the landmark event.

The City Rail Link is one of the biggest transport projects in New Zealand's history, so it's fitting that Auckland marked the occasion with a tradition that feels straight out of another century.

Instead of politicians getting all the attention, Jono took on the ceremonial role of announcing the occasion, bringing his trademark humour to a day that will be remembered by Aucklanders for years to come.

Now, with the City Rail Link officially open and Jono having completed his duties as Auckland's self-appointed Town Crier, the question is whether he'll be hanging on to the title.
