Melanie Lynskey and Robyn Malcolm reveal matching tattoos after filming 'Pike River'

Melanie Lynskey and Robyn Malcolm reveal the sweet story behind their matching tattoos.

Jono, Ben & Megan caught up with Kiwi stars Melanie Lynskey and Robyn Malcolm, who are front and centre in the new film Pike River, now showing in cinemas across Aotearoa.

The pair shared a sweet behind-the-scenes moment from filming - revealing they got matching tattoos after wrapping the movie. The tattoos honour the real-life women they portray: Anna Osborne and Sonya Rockhouse, who lost loved ones in the Pike River Mine disaster and became fierce advocates for justice.

One scene in the film shows the two women bonding over lollies in court. Lynskey and Malcolm were given liquorice allsorts to use in the scene, which they saw as symbolic of the friendship forming between their characters. But when Anna and Sonya saw the film, they had one note: “We hate liquorice allsorts!”

Pike River, directed by Robert Sarkies, focuses on the aftermath of the 2010 disaster and the emotional fight for accountability. It’s a moving tribute to two women who refused to give up - and the actors who brought their story to life.

Pike River is in theatres now.
