One year on, Adam & Megan caught up with some of the Kiwis affected by Cyclone Gabrielle to reflect on what they went through and see how they are doing now.

First, they spoke with Rikki Reed Davis A Hawke's Bay local who found himself in the thick of the initial cyclone devastation, freezing cold and clinging to a tree in Esk Valley he was rescued by the quote of the year 2023 holders Mikey Kihi, Rikki Kihi and Morehu Maxwell: "Nah, we're just three Māori boys," as the water raged around him.

Second up is Stacey Trotter. The Hits Hawke's Bay spoke with Stacey as she was evacuated one year ago, and she spoke of the recovery, life after the cyclone, and what it feels like to live in a new home that "doesn't feel like your own".

Finally, they caught up with Greg Miller, an Esk Valley local and owner of Valley D'vine restaurant. His venue became a hub for residents and for Mental Health support in the coming months. Greg was already well known for his support and fundraising for Gumboot Friday and was a huge supporter of his devastated community.
