International Women's Day is a time to honour the great women who helped shape the world and our lives, especially those who aren't with us anymore.

Sarah Gandy grew up without her mum Judy for the majority of her life after losing her to cancer when she was just 10 years old, so today she decided to pay tribute her by writing her a heartfelt letter.

"When you think about Women's Day you think about the women in your life who have really guided you," Sarah said on air this morning.

"I thought, I wonder what kind of person my mum would have liked me to grow up to be.

And obviously I can't have that conversation with her, but I can write her a letter."

Sarah teared up as she shared her emotional letter, which read:

"Hey Mum, today seems like a good day to think about the kind of woman you wanted me to be.

We didn't have that long together so I have to go with the fragments of memories I can place together.

You wanted me to be ambitious, you wanted me to follow my dreams.

You wanted me to be proud of being a woman.

You wanted me to be interested and encouraging.

You wanted me to listen and I think most of all you wanted me to care.

So today on International Women's Day, I remember you and I remember what you taught me and I'll keep working on being the woman that I think you wanted me to be."
