Gin Wigmore on her new album 'Beautiful Mess'

Brin sat down with Kiwi legend Gin Wigmore to chat her first album in eight years, Beautiful Mess, and her growth as an artist. 

It's finally here, and her new album is a vulnerable exploration of love, loss, and rebuilding yourself. "Naming an album after you've written all this music... has always been a challenge for me. But when I wrote the song, Beautiful Mess just made sense that this was like this. That little phrase right there encapsulates the whole album, and perfectly kind of explains it all," she said of the title of the record. 

Written in Palm Springs, Beautiful Mess came together in just seven days. Describing herself as an "adrenaline junkie" Gin explained that was how she was able to achieve such a feat. "I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie and very intense... I hadn't explored the idea of making an album in seven days. I was like, I want to make an album in seven days. So I took myself up to the desert with my drummer and my guitarist, and we did that."

The end result? An album that takes you on a real journey. 

Gin has come a long way since releasing her first album, Holy Smoke in 2009 "I was actually talking about Holy Smoke the other day. It's interesting seeing myself as the artist back then. It was very different to who I am now... and fair enough, I was in my twenties." The singer says she has become a better songwriter with age, and is feeling more empowered than ever.
