Sculpture on the Gulf is back for 2022 and it is set to be a magnificent showcase of work around Waiheke Island. It runs from the 4th to 27th March. With 31 new sculptures by New Zealand artists stretching along a stunning two kilometre coastal walkway from Matiatia to Oneroa village via Cable Bay Vineyard.

Walk, talk and take your time to connect and reflect with site-responsive sculpture.

Late last year I was able to head over to Waiheke and meet one of the sculptors, Anton Forde.

I spoke with him about his mahi, his motivation and passion and discovered a piece that has really stayed with him a couple of years on from its creation.

Here's my daughter Ava, taking a moment to reflect on her time at Anton's garage studio, hahaha, she loved the muddy puddles and rocks, stumps and posts he had around. All a bit overwhelming for this small human.

And this is the beautiful pounamu Anton gifted us to take home to absorb our wairua, to then return to him at some stage to carve for us. This was the overwhelming part for me xo
