1/19
1/19 Got my hands on this great new book from Annabel Langbein 'Essential' and decided to have a go at cooking my own loaf of bread
-
2/19
2/19 Looks pretty great in Annabel's book...lets see if I can recreate the magic at home

5/19 Adding honey to large bowl
-
6/19
6/19 Add the water and dissolve the honey
-
7/19
7/19 Add the active yeast and set aside for 10 minutes
-
8/19
8/19 After 10 minutes whisk up the yeast, honey, water
-
9/19
9/19 Add the dry ingredients - high grade flour going in here (sieve flour in, forgot to show pic of me doing the sieving!)
-
10/19
10/19 Wholewheat flour being added
-
11/19
11/19 Salt
-
12/19
12/19 Sunflower seeds
-
13/19
13/19 Combine. You can see and feel the yeast doing it's rising magic. Mixture stays quite wet/sloppy consistency
-
14/19
14/19 My tin holds about 5 cups so I'm putting half the mixture in and will do a second batch for remaining mixture
-
15/19
15/19 Sprinkle with pumpkin seeds and run a knife over the top in about 4 places to help it rise evenly
-
16/19
16/19 Bakey, bake. Low heat for first 20minutes then increases to high heat for another 25-35minutes.
-
17/19
17/19 Kitchen is smelling pretty great. Turned out of tin and cooling
-
18/19
18/19 Cutting in and searching for butter immediately!
-
19/19
19/19 Confession - My first batch didn't rise so well and was rubbery and dense inside. Still tasted ok but weird consistency. Turns out my active yeast was VERY expired and I think the water I set it in was too hot. Totally learnt something here for sure and glad of the confident re-do to ace it. Comparison pic - first attempt on left, successful round two on right - Yummo

Annabel Langbein has a fantastic new book out called 'ESSENTIAL' Annabel Langbein - Best Ever Meals For Busy Lives.
It focuses on savoury dishes from breakfast to dinner, as well as baking and snack ideas.
I've tagged a lot of pages with recipes I want to try but this is the first one I've chosen to do because I've never cooked my own bread and have sighed at the thought of all the resting, kneading and hard yards that go into making a loaf of bread. Didn't really believe I could make it myself.
This recipe says it has no rise time because it rises in the oven...woohoo, OK, I'm in! It also has great, easy to find and buy ingredients.
Take it away Busy People's Bread, we shall eat you at the end..hopefully.
For the full recipe see page 288 of Annabel’s new book ESSENTIAL Annabel Langbein (Annabel Langbein Media, $65), packed with more than 650 easy and delicious recipes and out now at good bookshops nationwide. And check out her fab website for inspiration too, right HERE
