James Corden has jokingly recalled his first meeting with Meryl Streep - claiming she mistook him for a waiter.

In a tongue-in-cheek nod to the acclaimed actress' feud with US president Donald Trump, he also branded her 'the worst' and a 'complete b*tch.'

The chat show host, 38, made the gags while presenting his Into The Woods co-star, 67, with the Costume Designers Guild's Distinguished Collaborator Award at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.

He shared a story of their first encounter at a restaurant, telling the audience:'We were in London and Meryl was having a bite to eat with Christine Baranski, and I walked over to the table, and I said, "Hello, I’m James."

'She looked me right in the eye and, I’ll never ever forget it, she said to me, "I’d like the lemon-encrusted salmon," ' the 38-year-old joked, according to the BBC.

'I explained to Meryl that I was an actor and I was actually about to play the Baker in Into The Woods alongside her and she said, "That’s great. I’d like the lemon-encrusted salmon with a Diet Coke." '

He told the laughing crowd: "What I'm trying to say is, and it's time that someone said it, she's a complete b*tch. She is the worst.

He concluded: "Now listen, I disagree with almost everything Donald Trump has ever said but when he tweeted that... I'm joking, of course. It's great to see someone like Meryl finally recognised with an award."

The pair laughed and chatted backstage after the ceremony on Tuesday.
