Lorde celebrated her 20th birthday yesterday; we took a look back at 20 times Lorde kicked butt.

The singer hinted at new music in her Facebook birthday post (which we are very excited about), and now her Mother Sonja, has shared her own tribute to the 20-yr-old singer.

Taking to Instagram, Sonja revealed an old photo of Ella (Lorde's birth name) accompanied by a long poetic piece, painting a picture of the Kiwi's childhood.

happy 20th for yr nyc birthday, ella. here's yr birthday card. this is a photobooth selfie that u made on my laptop (that I saved) when u were maybe 12 or 13 & way before yr flip phone had the internet & when credit for yr phone was bleeding me dry. i'd just bought u a pair of doc martens bc that's what u said u desperately i'll-never-ask-u for-anything-again needed. the blisters were crippling. i had to buy u some crazy fancy magazine for like a million dollars bc that would fix the pain. i'd never seen such magazines with big prices. we would eat at that fancy Japanese place on queen street where i said u had champagne tastes on a beer budget bc u were only earning $10 a week pocket money. we'd call by unity bks where i spent sooooo much money on every single bk I could afford for u & yr siblings. & it was a bit annoying bc u would read sometimes 2 bks a day ! in this picture u have that black eyeliner makeup thingy on - i don't know where u got this makeup - but some of it came from the $2 shop - probably poisonous - but it was a coveted thing. i liked all the makeup u created but i drew the line at that bright bright screaming blue lipstick that i banned u from wearing with me - & probably the only thing i ever banned u from btw. me n yr dad supported u to be whoever u wanted to be. now look at u. 20. Original. Making songs with killer lyrics. Xxxxmum

It's a beautiful, authentic reminder that Ella is a Kiwi kid just like the rest of us!
