The NZ flag change referendum is once again in the celebrity spotlight after a shout-out from an actor on The Big Bang Theory.

During the Valentine's Day-themed episode, the upcoming second vote on the flag got a shout-out from Sheldon Cooper, the show's leading nerdy character.

The episode sees Sheldon (played by Jim Parsons) and on-off girlfriend Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) host their regular online show, Fun With Flags.

They urged viewers to call in with thoughts and questions about flags and after blabbering on about emotions during a flag show, Sheldon gave the NZ flag change referendum a shout-out.

"Unless that emotion is excitement over New Zealand changing their flag - and good luck, you crazy Kiwis. We're rooting for ya," he said.

This isn't the first time the NZ flag referendum has received celebrity attention.

Comedian John Oliver recently revealed his own flag suggestion on his show, Last Week Tonight.
