Survivor NZ winner calls his family 'a**holes'

It wasn’t easy coming out top dog on Survivor NZ last week.

Winner Avi Duckor-Jones says he’s never had more than a few thousand dollars in his bank account so the winning prize of $100,000 was a shock, according to Woman’s Day.

The Wellingtonian admits that his family growing up “never really tread a normal path, so I don’t know what an ordinary life looks like.”

His dad Lloyd wrote the award-winning novel Mr. Pip and his mother JoEllen is a spiritual director for the Jewish community.

His parents split up when he was 16 years old and he recalls he felt “lost and confused.”

Even though he’s remembered as the ‘nice guy’ on Survivor NZ, he says:

“I like to think I’m a good person, but no-one’s just nice. I wouldn’t call my family nice. I’d say we are kind and well-meaning but we can also be a**holes.”

Duckor-Jones also says “winning Survivor isn’t the ultimate peak of my character, but I am incredibly proud and so grateful to have been a part of it.”
