Doctor Who fans were sent into overdrive, as the BBC unveiled three new companions set to join Jodie Whittaker in the TARDIS.

Bradley Walsh was confirmed to be joining the cast as a series regular, along with Hollyoaks stars Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill, according to the Daily Mail .

In the first look photo, the Series 11 cast was revealed for the first time, and will make their screen debut in 2018.

Bradley, who is most well-known for hosting The Chase, as well as appearing in Law and Order: UK and Coronation Street, will play a new character called Graham, while Mandip will play Yasmin and Tosin will play Ryan.

The new Who cast told The Radio Times of their excitement to be performing in the iconic sci-fi drama, which has been on screens for 54 years.

Bradley said: "I remember watching William Hartnell as the first Doctor. Black and white made it very scary for a youngster like myself. I was petrified but even though I'd watch most of it from behind the sofa through my fingers, I became a fan.

"Am I thrilled to be part of this whole groundbreaking new dawn for the Doctor?? Oh yes!"

Mandip said: "I am over the moon to be joining the Doctor Who family. Certain roles seem unattainable and this is one of those, so much so I didn't believe it to be true for the first few weeks!"

West End star Sharon D Clarke is also set to join the cast in a recurring role, though little is known about her character.

Doctor Who will soon be under the writership of a new showrunner, with Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall set to take over from Steven Moffat at the end of this year.

Bradley was previously rumoured to be joining the cast back in August, with fans torn on the prospect of the light-hearted comedian heading into space with Jodie Whittaker.

He is no stranger to the Who-niverse, appearing in the spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures in 2008.

However, since the announcement, Whovians have taken to social media with delight at the new cast.

One wrote: "If Bradley Walsh is the full-time companion then Doctor Who is gonna be fantastic this season!"

Another exclaimed: "Bradley Walsh being in the next series of Doctor Who has made me even more excited"

Doctor Who will begin its transition to the new team this Christmas, when Peter Capaldi departs from the role after four years, in an epic festive departure feature Mark Gatiss and David Bradley as The First Doctor (originally played by William Hartnell).

Jodie Whittaker was first announced as the first female Doctor in history in July, with fans thrilled at the prospect of a woman manning the TARDIS.

The new series is set to start filming soon, and will be a noticeably shorter season featuring only ten episodes, though each episode will be an hour long.

Fans can say farewell to Peter Capaldi when Doctor Who returns on Christmas Day.
