If a teaser for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice whet your appetite, the full-length trailer will have you on the edge of your seat.

The action-packed promo kicks off with a tense first meeting of the superheroes, with Superman (Henry Cavill) as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent and Batman as Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck).

"What's your position on the bat vigilante in Gotham?" the roving reporter asks wealthy American businessman, Wayne.

Wayne responds, his disdain palpable, suggesting the two know each other's secret identity.

"Every time your hero saves a cat out of a tree you write a puff piece editorial," he tells Kent in the full-length three-minute trailer, aired during Jimmy Kimmel Live on December 2.

"Maybe it's the Gotham City in me. We just have a bad history with freaks dressed like clowns."

After the tough talk, it's war. There's plenty of action, fireballs and destruction in the superheroes' first big-screen pairing as Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis's most revered, modern-day saviour, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs.

And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before.

It is during a showdown in the epic blockbuster, that Wonderwoman pops up from nowhere. "Is she with you?" Superman asks Batman.

The Zack Snyder-directed film, which will mark Oscar winner Affleck's first appearance as Batman, is a sequel to the 2013 movie Man of Steel.

Some fans were not happy with the casting decision, with a petition launched following the announcement. The role was previously held by Christian Bale.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in New Zealand on March 24.
