Astronomers may have just found a new planet right on the edge of our solar system & the team behind the discovery reckon it's 1.5 times the size of earth.Â
A team of astronomers from Mexico and Sweden identified the unseen object as a 'a new blackbody point source' moving in conjunction with the Alpha Centauri star system, which means it cannot be just any ordinary star.
"Simple arguments convince us that this object cannot be an ordinary star. We argue that the object is most likely part of the solar system, in prograde motion, albeit at a distance too far to be detectable at other wavelengths," researchers reported.Â
The object has been named ‘Gna’.
However of course there are other scientists who are sceptical about the finding. Their first suspicion being the fact that the team behind the 'discovery' is unsure whether it's small, or just really far away.
On of the spoil-sports, Mike Brown, a researcher at Caltech who 'killed Pluto', tore apart the thesis.
"Fun fact: if it is true that ALMA accidentally discovered a massive outer solar system object in its tiny tiny tiny field of view that would suggest that there are something like 200,000 Earth sized planets in the outer solar system. Which, um, no. Even better: I just realized that this many Earth-sized planets existing would destabilize the entire solar system and we would all die," he said.
So there ya go; two differing theories. Either way, it's all pretty interesting!
