Chris Pratt’s Mario voice in first trailer for 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' leaves fans confused

The very first trailer for the new Super Mario Bros. Movie has just dropped – and it has some fans scratching their heads.

Based on Nintendo’s iconic Super Mario Bros. video games, the upcoming animated movie starring Chris Pratt has Mario has had fans very curious.

Earlier this year the actor told Variety that he "worked really closely with the directors" to find the perfect Mario voice, adding, "[We tried] out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of."

However, fans were quick to point out that his Mario – who usually has quite a distinct voice – sounded just like Chris’ normal speaking voice.

"Chris Pratt's voice is still jarring to hear coming out of Mario but everything else in the Mario trailer looked amazing. I'm genuinely excited to see this thing," one fan wrote on Twitter.

However, some fans defended the choice, with one noting that a feature-length film with the “classic Mario voice” would have been “a lot”

“Chris Pratt discourse aside, would hearing the classic Mario voice for 90 minutes also have been a lot?,” a fan noted on Twitter. “Imagine him delivering a crucial line, then adding “Okey Dokey!”

Another fan said that this movie was exactly what they had been hoping for.

“I can't get over that after waiting my entire life, we may finally be getting a movie worthy of Mario's name,” the Twitter user added. “It's EXACTLY what I've wanted for over 30 years, and watching the teaser filled me with so much glee and briefly turned me into a child again.”

The flick is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and alongside Chris stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to hit cinemas in New Zealand on March 30, 2023.
