Classic Kiwi kids’ show You and Me is back for a new generation

A familiar Kiwi favourite is making its long-awaited return after 28 years for a new generation.

One of Aotearoa’s most beloved children’s shows is striking a nostalgic and excitingly fresh chord, with the iconic You and Me theme song now released across all major music streaming platforms.

The release comes ahead of the premiere of a brand new season of the much-loved series, hosted by legendary children’s entertainer Suzy Cato. The new season, the first in over 28 years, will launch on Saturday 2nd May via YouTube, bringing the magic of You and Me to a whole new generation and meeting modern viewing habits to keep the series accessible to Kiwis.

For decades, Suzy Cato has been a cornerstone of children’s entertainment in New Zealand, with You and Me holding a special place in the hearts of audiences who grew up with its songs, stories and sense of wonder. First broadcast on TV3 in 1993, the series delivered over 2,000 episodes and was credited as one of the first children's television programmes to weave Te Reo Māori into everyday conversation. This latest chapter celebrates and continues that legacy while opening the door for today’s young viewers to experience the same magic.

“Over the years, I’ve been so lucky to meet people who grew up watching You and Me, and now they’re parents themselves,” says creator and host Suzy Cato. “It’s incredibly special to know they can now introduce their own little ones to the show and the songs and share that joy together.”

In an exciting extension of the series, each of the 25 weekly episodes will be accompanied by the release of a key song from that episode, including the Kiwi classic ‘It’s Our Time’, giving families the chance to keep the joy going long after the screen goes dark.

The new instalment features episodes designed for preschool audiences, blending music, movement, storytelling and Te Reo Māori in a format that reflects how young children watch and learn today.

Releasing the theme song digitally for the first time reflects how children now discover and engage with music, allowing You and Me to live beyond the screen and become part of everyday family listening.

Few children’s shows have made such cultural impact and hold significance to be shared across generations, making You and Me a rare cultural touchstone for whānau who grew up with the show and are now sharing it with their own tamariki.
