We've always been told that we have to turn out phones onto flight mode, otherwise the plane might malfunction.

However these days, modern technology in cellphones has reduced this risk dramatically. According to Daily Mail, "this is not a problem with new phones and on-board systems such as picocells, which aren’t widely used."

But you'll probably notice that we're still asked to turn our phones off or onto flight mode...

Why, though?

It's actually to do with eliminating the risk of annoying the pilots and other passengers!

The fear is that people will have loud conversations annoying their fellow passengers and ruining their flight experience. Who knew?!

However, some phones can still interfere with the radios. You know that "dit-dit-dit-dit" tone you hear when your phone sometimes sits next to a speaker? Well, this can happen in-flight, distracting the pilot and potentially causing them to miss an important cue.

And there you have it! Not really what we thought at all.
