A professional hunter has been brutally trampled to death by the elephant he was hunting.

Ian Gibson had been tracking the elephant bull in Zimbabwe this week, when the animal attacked the hunter.

The hunter got as close as 50m to the animal, before it "instantly turned and began a full charge", as explained by website Safari Classics.

The elephant was said to have been in 'musth', a period of behavioural change that is characterised by extreme aggression.

The website described the attack as "very graphic".

The story has gained a lot of media attention, primarily because of the recent controversy surrounding professional hunting.

Professional hunting is where people can pay a fee to hunt and kill animals.
