James Van Der Beek planned a revival of an iconic TV show

The actor had discussed rebooting the beloved teen drama with Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson on several occasions. Kevin told Esquire: “James and I talked about rebooting Dawson’s Creek several times. He wanted to do it. And in fact, there was a moment where he was going to write it, and he had a really great idea for it.”

The reboot would have revisited the characters years later, exploring their lives as adults while staying true to the heartfelt drama and friendships that made the original so beloved. Inspired by the hit series This Is Us, James’ vision aimed to balance nostalgia with fresh stories, showing how the Capeside gang navigated love, career, and family in a new era.

Kevin explained, “He had a beautiful plan. Then I think he got on a show, and everybody got busy. It never happened. But there was a lot of talk about it.”

Kevin also reflected on how James embodied the character he played so memorably. “He was Dawson. He was always questioning every script! He was always questioning the lines, ‘Why am I saying this? Why am I doing that?’” Studio bosses were initially hesitant to cast James in the role, but he fought to make it happen. Kevin recalled, “I can remember him coming in to audition. And I was like, ‘Are you crazy? What’s wrong with you? That’s Dawson. Trust me."

Despite never returning to the show itself, James remained close to Kevin and his co-stars, supported by his loving wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek. Kevin shared, “Kimberly was wonderful about that. She was very in touch.”

Co-star Busy Philipps, who played Audrey Liddell during the show’s final two seasons, summed James up beautifully: “My heart is deeply hurting for all of us today. James Van Der Beek was one in a billion and he will be forever missed.”

James Van Der Beek’s vision for a Dawson’s Creek reboot may never have come to life, but his passion, creativity, and heart continue to inspire. His dream showed fans the joy of revisiting beloved characters while exploring life’s next chapters, proving that even in plans unfulfilled, his optimism and imagination left a lasting legacy.
