A man who was shot in the leg during the Paris atrocities last weekend also survived the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre.
Only known as Matthew, was at the foot of the twin towers in 2001 when planes hit the buildings but he described being caught up in the Islamic State massacre as ‘1,000 times worse’.
Matthew was among the crowd at the Bataclan concert hall watching the Californian band Eagles of Death Metal when gunmen stormed the building and unleashed a hail of bullets.
He told Le Monde newspaper he managed to crawl towards the exit each time the terrorists stopped firing their guns.
"I inched forward centimetre by centimetre. At one point, I saw the ledge of the exit at arm’s reach. I was able to grip it with one finger, then the other."
89 people were killed inside the theater but Matthew managed to escape the building after 'playing dead' as the horror unfolded. He collapsed on the pavement outside and a journalist, who works at Le Monde, took him to safety.
"I was playing dead. When I felt someone dragging me by the arms, I didn’t even look up. I said, or at least in my head – “I love you, my angel”.
