A Sydney man, David Marlin, will spend at least 9-years in jail after viciously attacking an unsuspecting woman on a train.

CCTV footage shows Marlin approaching the woman on a train near Ingleburn, Sydney's Southwest, to shake her hand and then quickly swings his arm to hit her in the face.

Marlin has since been sentenced to 9-years behind bars. It turns out, he has an extensive criminal history, dating back to 1984 which includes multiple assaults. He was also jailed for three years in 2006 for rape charges.

The woman who he attacked suffered from a mental illness.

"She was simply helpless to protect herself from this forceful, vicious and determined attack," Judge Paul Conlon said.

His ex-wife, Margaret Dickson, also attended court and told reporters she was "happy as hell" with the outcome.

"He's just an animal" she said
