The top five ways to keep your pets safe and calm during fireworks season

Fireworks can be fun for us, but for many pets they're one of the most stressful nights of the year. Here's how to help them feel safe.

Both Guy Fawkes and Diwali are on this week, and while the fireworks might be exciting for the family, they can be a very different story for your furry friends.

Animal welfare experts say the loud bangs, bright flashes and unpredictable noises can leave pets feeling anxious and frightened, with some even trying to escape in panic.

If you've got pets at home, these five simple steps can help make the night a little easier:

1. Bring them inside before dark

Don't wait until the fireworks start. Make sure cats, dogs and smaller pets are safely indoors well before sunset.

2. Create a cosy hideaway

Many animals naturally want to hide when they're scared. Set up a quiet space with their bed, favourite blanket and toys where they can retreat if they need to.

3. Close the curtains and turn on the TV (or listen to The Hits)

Shutting curtains can help block flashes of light, while music, the television or other background noise can help mask the sound of fireworks outside.

4. Exercise and feed them early

A walk, play session and dinner before the fireworks begin can help your pet settle in for the evening feeling more relaxed and comfortable.

5. Stay calm and let them choose

Some pets will want cuddles, while others will prefer to curl up alone. Reassure them if they seek comfort, but don't force them out of their safe spot.

One final tip: double-check your pet's microchip details and ID tags are up to date. Fireworks are one of the most common times for scared pets to go missing.

If your pet struggles with fireworks every year, it's worth chatting to your vet about calming products or other options before Guy Fawkes night arrives.
