Tinder to allow background checks for users

Online dating can be rewarding - but it can also be scary.

Quite often you'll find yourself messaging someone you don't have any mutuals with - aka complete strangers.

Tinder is helping us stay safe on the app by taking the step to allow users the opportunity to run background checks.

Tinder's parent company Match Group, Inc. (which also owns Hinge) has partnered with non-profit company Garbo to provide people with "more transparency and information about whomever they connect with".

Garbo only requires a full name and phone number to run the background check, which takes around three minutes - and you can get your first two checks done for free.

Complex resports that the program will scour public records and alert someone if their match has any prior arrests or convictions, as well as notify them if they have registered as a sex offender.
