'Voicemails for Isabelle' is the new rom-com you need to watch

Introducing the new rom-com everyone’s swooning over

If your idea of a perfect watch is something in the Off Campus universe - swoony, a little messy, and guaranteed to hit you in the feelings - Netflix has quietly delivered your next obsession.

Voicemails for Isabelle dropped on June 19, and while it may not have been on your radar last week, it’s quickly become that movie everyone is texting their friends about. With a critics' score sitting comfortably in the mid-80s on Rotten Tomatoes (and an even higher audience rating), it’s clear: people are all in.

So no, you haven’t missed it - if anything, this is perfect timing.

The rom-com that sneaks up on you

At first glance, Voicemails for Isabelle feels like your classic modern love story. But don’t be fooled - this one leans just as hard into the emotional side as it does the swoon-worthy moments.

The story follows Jill (Zoey Deutch), who, after losing her sister, copes by leaving her voicemails about everything going on in her life - the chaos, the heartbreak, the dating disasters.

What she doesn’t realise? That number has been reassigned.

On the other end is Wes (Nick Robinson), an Austin real estate agent who starts listening to her deeply personal (and often hilariously unfiltered) messages… and slowly falls for her without ever meeting her.

It’s giving modern Sleepless in Seattle - but with more edge, more honesty, and yes… more tears.

Why it’s hitting right now

If you loved the emotional pull of Off Campus or any of those BookTok romances that blend humour with just enough angst, this is right in that lane.

It’s not a teen love story - it’s a little more grown up, a little more grounded, and that actually makes it hit harder. The connection builds slowly, the emotions feel real, and the chemistry between the leads does a lot of the heavy lifting.

Also worth noting: this isn’t based on a book (even though it seriously feels like one you’d binge in a weekend). It’s an original screenplay from writer-director Leah McKendrick, inspired by her own relationship with her sister, which explains why it feels so personal.

Who’s in it

You’ll definitely recognise a few familiar faces - and that’s part of the charm:

  • Zoey Deutch as Jill - if you loved Set It Up or Something From Tiffany’s, you already know she’s basically rom-com royalty now
  • Nick Robinson as Wes - best known for Love, Simon and Maid, bringing that soft, slightly awkward romantic lead energy
  • Nick Offerman - yes, Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson himself, but this time as Jill’s intimidating chef boss
  • Lukas Gage - you’ve seen him pop up in The White Lotus and Euphoria
  • Harry Shum Jr. - Glee fans, hi (plus Crazy Rich Asians)
  • Ciara Bravo as Isabelle - recognisable from Cherry and Big Time Rush

It’s one of those casts where everyone just fits, and the chemistry across the board is a big reason the movie works so well.

Weekend plans? Officially sorted.

This is one of those movies you throw on thinking it’ll be an easy, feel-good watch… and then suddenly you’re fully invested, slightly emotional, and texting your friends halfway through.

A little funny, a little chaotic, and a lot heartfelt - Voicemails for Isabelle is exactly the kind of rom-com we love to binge. You can watch it now on Netflix.
